Put Down What You Are Carrying

An invitation to notice the invisible burdens we carry — inherited stories, fears, expectations, and old identities — and choose a different path.

Behind the Painting

The story behind the work

Put Down What You Are Carrying grew from conversations about the invisible burdens people accumulate over time: beliefs, expectations, fears, and old stories that begin to feel like part of the body. After several versions of the concept, the final composition contrasts figures moving with the herd against the moment of choosing to set the weight down and step onto another path. The painting holds a quiet act of liberation: becoming conscious of what we carry, putting it down, and moving differently.

Two Perspectives

In Stephanie and Grant’s words

Stephanie Clair

I see this work as a moment of choice — the moment someone steps away from the crowd, puts the backpack down, and begins moving toward who they really are rather than who they were told to be.

Grant Pecoff

This painting reminds me that the burdens we carry are not always visible, and they are not always ours to keep. I loved watching the atmosphere and emotional narrative emerge through Stephanie’s painting, with the image becoming a clear invitation to choose a new direction.
