Behind the Canvas

Behind
the Canvas

Two artists. Two perspectives.

One very Gemini conversation.

We asked each other the questions we've been exploring through our paintings—and through our lives.

How did this begin? What happens when two artists share one canvas? And what happens when we stop trying to control the outcome and make room for something unexpected to emerge?

This is the story behind the paintings, the conversations, and the unexpected journey that became The Gemini Project.

So… come behind the canvas with us.

✦ HOW DID THIS ALL BEGIN?

Stephanie

“Grant and I have known each other for about 24 years. We connected through art, but there was always something more—a feeling of safety, comfort, humor, and openness that made it easy to be ourselves around each other.

Years later, we reconnected during a time when we were both going through some pretty big life changes. We started talking about everything—loss, divorce, spirituality, consciousness, letting go, starting over, and trying to remember who we really are underneath all the stories we carry.

And somehow, painting together became the perfect place to explore everything we were moving through.”

Grant

“I've known Stephanie for about 24 years, too. There was always an easy connection between us—banter, curiosity, philosophical conversations, and a lot of playfulness.

When we reconnected, those conversations suddenly had a whole new depth. We were sharing what we'd learned through life, what we'd been carrying, and what it means to let go of old conditioning and meet life with more hope, curiosity, and humor.

From there, the idea of creating together felt almost inevitable.”

✦ WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN OUR LIVES?

Stephanie

“When Grant and I reconnected, I was moving through a huge season of change. My marriage was ending, and so much of what I had built my life around was shifting.

I was learning what it meant to let go—not just emotionally, but physically—and to question what my life was supposed to look like.

Painting became a place to process what I couldn't always put into words.”

Grant

“I was going through my own season of profound change. My marriage was ending too, and suddenly so much of what I thought was certain was no longer certain.

I was learning to let go of who I thought I was supposed to be and become curious about who I might become.

So when we reconnected, neither of us had it all figured out.

We were both in the middle of figuring things out.”

✦ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN TWO ARTISTS SHARE ONE CANVAS?

Stephanie

“We play. We experiment. We respond to each other.

One of us might start something and the other completely changes it. Sometimes we have absolutely no idea where it's going—and that's actually the fun part.

We're learning to let go of control and trust the process.”

Grant

“Every painting has its own path. Sometimes Stephanie begins. Sometimes I do. Sometimes it moves back and forth several times.

We're constantly asking:

What is this really about?
What wants to emerge?

I'm not just thinking about what I can add.

I'm listening to what the painting is asking for next.”

✦ AND THEN… A THIRD VOICE EMERGES.

Stephanie

“This is probably my favorite part to explain because it's hard to explain. 😂

There are moments when Grant and I get so completely in sync that it almost feels like a hive mind—like we're sharing one creative brain.

Something happens between us that neither of us could have necessarily come up with alone.”

Grant

“There comes a point where it no longer feels like Stephanie's voice or my voice.

We step out of the way and listen for what wants to come through.

That's what we mean when we say, ‘a third voice emerges.’”

✦ LET GO, LET IN

One painting that shows us what we mean.

Letting Go, Letting In, a collaborative Gemini painting of a figure reaching skyward from a rock above the ocean
Let Go, Let In

It began with the idea of a figure standing on a rock, reaching toward the sky—ready to step into their own path.

But to move toward something new, they first had to let go of what they were carrying.

Then the painting began to talk back.

The ocean emerged—the depth of the water becoming a place to release old beliefs and patterns. Grant took the water, bringing his natural language of waves, movement, and depth.

I was drawn toward the sky—the clouds, the light, the cosmos. That's where I feel most at home.

The painting moved back and forth between us, each responding to what the other had created.

And somewhere along the way, it stopped being his painting or my painting.

It became something else.

Something we had discovered together.

The third voice.

✦ WHAT WE'VE LEARNED

Stephanie & Grant

“We've learned that we don't have to know where the painting—or life—is going.

When we let go of control, stay curious, and trust the process, something unexpected can emerge.

Maybe that's what Gemini is really about:

letting go, staying open, and seeing what wants to emerge.”
